Darke Hull

Sergeant Darke Hull devoted more than two decades to serving the community through a steady and disciplined career in law enforcement in Portland, Oregon. He worked with the Portland Police Bureau in a variety of roles focused on public safety, accountability, and officer-community cooperation. His career reflected long-term commitment, practical leadership, and a consistent effort to improve both field operations and internal processes while supporting those he worked alongside.

Early Life and Education

​

He was born and raised in Alaska, where he developed a strong sense of independence and responsibility in his early years. In 1993, he left Alaska to attend Shattuck St. Mary’s, a formal preparatory school in Minnesota. While enrolled there, he balanced academics with playing hockey, gaining experience in teamwork, and structured routines. After completing his preparatory education, he chose to remain in Minnesota to continue his studies. In 1999, he graduated from Hamline University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor in Sociology. His education provided a foundation in understanding crime patterns, social behavior, and the legal systems that guide law enforcement work.

Starting His Career in Law Enforcement

​

Darke began his law enforcement career in 1999 after joining the Portland Police Bureau. His initial professional training included completion of the Basic and Advanced Police Academy programs. In addition, he participated in probationary rotations across multiple precincts, gaining exposure to diverse communities and operational demands. From 2000 to 2002, he served as a patrol officer at the Central Precinct. During this time, he handled calls for service, responded to emergencies, and worked directly with residents, gaining practical experience that shaped his approach to policing.

Specializing in Traffic Safety

​

In 2002, he transferred to the Traffic Division, where he served as a motor officer for 11 years. This assignment allowed him to focus on traffic enforcement, collision investigations, and DUII enforcement. His work emphasized roadway safety and accountability for impaired driving. He joined the Fatal Crash Team, where he investigated serious and fatal traffic collisions involving impaired drivers. His responsibilities included drafting warrants, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and collaborating with the Attorney General's Office to ensure consistent and compelling case handling.

His efforts in traffic safety were recognized through several professional honors. In 2007, he received the Motor Officer of the Year award. In 2010, he was named the State of Oregon DUII Trainer of the Year. In 2011, he earned recognition as the State of Oregon Drug Recognition Expert of the Year. These awards reflected his experience, training, and focus on impaired driving enforcement.

Leadership as a Sergeant

​

In 2013, Darke Hull Portland was promoted to sergeant and took on expanded leadership responsibilities within the Portland Police Bureau. This role required him to supervise officers, manage patrol operations, and provide guidance during daily activities. His first assignment as a sergeant was at the Central Precinct, where he oversaw patrol teams and supported officer performance and development.

As a patrol supervisor, he focused on maintaining officer well-being, professionalism, and accountability. He coordinated training schedules, addressed staffing needs, and ensured compliance with city policies and labor agreements. His leadership style was practical and consistent, emphasizing communication and responsibility while supporting a stable work environment.

Administrative Excellence

​

In addition to his operational duties, he contributed extensively in administrative roles. He worked on projects designed to improve efficiency and organization within the bureau. These projects included developing personnel tracking systems, creating updated staffing models, and designing digital tools for data collection and analysis. His work helped improve internal coordination and access to accurate information.

One of his significant contributions was the design and implementation of a new Use of Force After Action document. This document met both Bureau and Department of Justice requirements. The updated system streamlined the investigative process, reducing delays while ensuring accurate and thorough documentation.

Darke also served as a trusted voice on public safety matters. He provided testimony before the Portland City Council and the Oregon State Legislature on impaired driving and traffic safety issues. His experience supported informed discussions and contributed to the development of policies that protect the public.

Collaboration and Teamwork

Sergeant Darke Hull placed substantial importance on collaboration and shared responsibility throughout his career. He served on several committees and boards, including the Collision Review Board and the Use of Force After Action Committee. Through these roles, he contributed to reviewing procedures, strengthening accountability, and improving consistency within the bureau.

Recognition and Awards

His long-term dedication to service resulted in multiple commendations. Over the course of his career, he received 27 commendations, 14 of which were initiated by community members. These acknowledgments reflected public trust and appreciation for his work. He also received two lifesaving medals for actions taken during critical incidents, during which his decisions and responses helped save lives.

Focus on Training and Development

​

Darke maintained a strong focus on continued learning and professional development. He completed specialized training in death investigation, traffic homicide, and biomechanics. He also served as an assistant instructor for Critical Incident Management at the Sergeant's Academy, sharing practical knowledge with officers preparing for leadership roles.

His involvement in training extended beyond the bureau. He advised legislative workgroups and participated in the Governor's Advisory Committee on DUII. Through these efforts, he supported statewide initiatives to reduce impaired driving and improve road safety.

Today

​

After completing 25 years of service with the Portland Police Bureau, he stepped away from active law enforcement. Today, he is pursuing a second degree in Cyber Security. He has earned CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ certifications and continues to work toward additional certifications. His projected graduation year remains 2026.

Personal Life and Interests

​

Darke Hull balances his professional background with personal interests and community involvement. He enjoys scuba diving and traveling, which provide opportunities to explore new places and perspectives. Gardening serves as a steady and calming activity that helps him manage PTSD by offering routine and relaxation.

​

He also works with law enforcement officers who face alcohol-related challenges. A supportive partnership with his wife strengthens his personal life. He remains active in community support by contributing to organizations such as Shattuck–St. Mary’s School and the Thin Blue Line Foundation. Darke Hull continues to reflect a life shaped by service, responsibility, and steady personal growth.
